A collective anchorage in north-east Madagascar

ANTOKALY is carried by Landrique and Yassine, two producers gathered around the same collective in Antalaha. Their commitments belong to the way of growing, preparing and following the vanilla, with respect for the soils, biodiversity and the women and men who cultivate it.

Each vine engages a wider balance: the soils that carry it, the trees that shelter it, the families that tend it, and the children who grow up around this craft.

Our values

Preserve

Honouring the soils, the shade trees, biodiversity and the natural balances that let vanilla express itself over time.

Transmit

Keeping alive the Malagasy techniques of cultivation, preparation and maturation, and refining them with the members of our collective.

Uplift

Linking lot quality to living conditions: drinking water, health, schooling and the integration of new members who share these values.

Concrete commitments

Proof rooted in the daily life of our collective

The commitments take shape in the plots, in the sorting work, in the diversification programmes and in the collective framework that supports the families.

Cultivation

Agroforestry

All our production sits within agroforestry, in plots where shade, soils, trees and associated crops take part in the plant's balance.

Living environment

Biodiversity

Plant diversity supports the vitality of the soils, the resilience of the plots and the continuity of the agricultural cycle around vanilla.

Farming framework

Organic

About 40% of plantations are certified organic. The other plots are in conversion and follow the same growing principles, with attention to the soils, to agricultural practices and to respect for the environment.

Diversification

Nurseries

Thanks to the premiums from direct sales, our collective has launched a first agricultural diversification programme with 3,000 young clove and black pepper plants. Our members already grow in agroforestry, where vanilla sits alongside cinnamon, clove, pepper, cocoa, pineapple or coconut. This first step strengthens these balances, opens new income for the producing families and gradually builds a more resilient agriculture around vanilla.

Communities

Supporting families around the production areas

Communities

Drinking water

The collective takes part in the construction of wells to bring drinking water to members and to the families living around the production areas.

Health

Mutuelle Mahavelona

The partnership with Mutuelle Mahavelona provides health coverage to the members of the collective and to their families.

Future

Schooling

Schooling the children of members is part of the commitment of our collective, to support families and the generations growing up on this territory.

Continuous improvement

Moving the craft forward with those who carry it

Each season lets us refine the methods of cultivation, preparation and maturation. Observations from the plots, lot quality and the experience of the members feed this progress.

Our collective progressively brings in new members who share its values: respect for the living world, demanding standards in work, local solidarity and the transmission of practices.

Observe

Observing the real state of the plots and lots.

Adjust

Evolving the methods with the producers.

Transmit

Keeping the techniques that ground quality.

Understanding the vanilla begins with understanding its source

From the collective to the aged lots, each vanilla keeps the memory of its territory.
